The purchase of an appliance is a significant expense in the family economy, so it is good to know the most durable and reliable brands on the market before making this decision. A recent household appliance reliability survey, carried out by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) and which includes 85,000 ratings from European consumers, confirms for yet another year that Miele is the longest-lasting brand: the useful life of its washers, dryers, dishwashers and refrigerators reaches 15 years on average.
The OCU has also developed a reliability index, by type of appliance, based on the number and severity of breakdowns reported by users, which allows it to offer a ranking of brands and appliances.
In this list, the brand that stands out above the rest is Miele, since it stands in the first position in both washers and dryers. As for dishwashers, it is also in the top positions, although Neff, Selecline and Haier also stand out for their good performance. As far as refrigerators are concerned, the Kunft brand is the most reliable, followed by Franke and Buknecht. On the opposite side, the least reliable, is the Smeg brand.
The OCU survey also includes the most frequent faults that occur according to the type of appliance. Thus, in washing machines, the most frequent repairs are related to the door and the filter. In the case of dryers, the drying system is the one that usually gives more problems. In dishwashers, the evacuation pump is the most common fault and in refrigerators, the 'No Frost' system is the cause of most calls to technicians.
In most of the responses given by consumers, the change of device is motivated by the high cost of redistributing appliances and the lack of spare parts, which is one of the fundamental causes of premature obsolescence.
