Washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators... large electrical appliances are essential in our daily lives and represent a significant financial outlay. Whether the investment is profitable depends on the useful life of the device and for this it is important to know how to choose among the most durable and reliable brands.
The durability of household appliances varies greatly from one manufacturer to another and knowing which ones best withstand the passage of time and which have the fewest breakdowns are essential requirements when selecting one product or another. To do this, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has carried out a macro survey in which citizens have evaluated the duration and reliability of their main electrical appliances. In the opinion of users, the average duration of large household appliances is around 11-12 years, although there are several brands that exceed those expectations and others that do not even reach them.
The OCU asked 85,000 consumers in Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain how long their previous electrical appliances had been working properly to assess the duration and reliability of the different brands. In addition, with this information, an estimate has been made of the average time that an appliance can be expected to last.
In the top of the brands that last the longest, the German Miele stands out, according to users. This manufacturer stands out as the most durable, by far, in washers and dryers, with an average life of 16 years, a lifespan of 15 years in dishwashers, and 14 years in refrigerators. Other brands that stand out for their reliability are Zanussi in washers and dryers, Beko in dryers, Neff in dishwashers and Kunft in refrigerators.
As for washing machines, one of the essential electrical appliances in our homes, there are noticeable differences between the different brands. Although its average life is just over 11 years, there are longer-lasting models. For example, Miele washing machines can easily reach 16 years, far exceeding the life of other brands, according to consumers.
The average life of a dishwasher is about 11 years. However, those of the Miele brand can have a useful life of 15 years compared to the 12 that those of Thomson, Balay, Bosch, AEG, Siemens, Zanussi, Baucknecht, Smeg or Neff last.
For its part, the average duration of refrigerators is about 12 years, although several brands exceed that retirement age. Among these, General Electric stands out, with about 15 years, followed by Brand, Miele, Zanussi and Ignis, with 14 years.
Dryers usually last about 12 years and again Miele is the one that stands out the most with its 15 years on average.
The OCU has also carried out a reliability index for each type of appliance, taking into account the number and severity of faults reported by users.
In washing machines, after Miele, the good results of Zanussi, Bosch and Siemens stand out. While Edesa is the brand with the worst reliability.
In dryers, Miele is also the most reliable brand, in this case followed by Zanussi and Beko, in that order.
In dishwashers, the first positions are for Neff, Selecline (Alcampo), Miele and Haier. And below average are Smeg, LG, Fagor and Brandt
In refrigerators, the Kunft (Worten) brand stands out well above the rest; followed by Franke and Buknecht. Smeg, for its part, would be among the least reliable, according to consumer responses.
